Overview

Kansas educators with expertise in English Language Arts are building a series of modules designed to provide FREE, flexible professional learning for individual teachers and teacher teams. These modules are self-paced learning guides designed for one teacher or groups of teachers (e.g., grade level PLCs, content area PLCs), and may be completed during collaborative time, plan periods, or other time allotted for professional learning.

KANSANS CAN…be civically engaged.

In Fall 2015, the Kansas State Board of Education revealed a new vision for education in Kansas: to lead the world in the success of each student. This audacious goal is supported by a number of measurable outcomes, one of which is civic engagement. Teachers of English Language Arts (ELA) can influence this outcome by embedding skills necessary for civic engagement into ELA instruction.

KANSANS CAN…address SECD skills in ELA

In Fall 2015, the Kansas State Board of Education revealed a new vision for education in Kansas: to lead the world in the success of each student. This audacious goal is supported by a number of measurable outcomes, one of which is to improve social, emotional, and character development (SECD) skills of students in Kansas schools. Teachers of English Language Arts (ELA) are uniquely positioned to address SECD skills through reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language. The modules included in this community will help teachers of ELA consider multiple ways to embed SECD skills into their regular ELA instruction.

KANSANS CAN…create better writers.

In Fall 2015, the Kansas State Board of Education revealed a new vision for education in Kansas: to lead the world in the success of each student. This audacious goal is supported by a number of measurable outcomes, one of which is to improve postsecondary success for Kansas students. Effective self-expression through writing is an essential skill for Kansas students if they are to be successful in their postsecondary pursuits. This community will include modules focused on ways in which Kansas educators can create competent, confident young writers.
