Instructional Guidance

KSDE does not review or recommend resources to local school districts. However, the agency can assist in providing links to available resources to assist with materials adoptions and instructional alignment. Additionally, the KSDE Math Committee created a "Resource Adoption Guide" that can be utilized by districts to outline the appropriate steps necessary for choosing valuable instructional resources. While this document was created by the math team, it was repurposed to be relevant to the instruction of English Language Arts. That resource guide can be found at the bottom of this page.

This site can help educators determine alignment with current Kansas standards by providing rubrics to assist in the evaluation of lessons, units, and materials. Rubrics also exist for evaluating open educational resources.

What Works Clearinghouse                                                                                                                        What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) reviews the existing research ond different  programs, practices, and policies in education. Their goal is to provide educators with the information they need to make evidence-based decisions.

Ed Reports Reviews
Ed Reports provides reports and reviews of currently available materials. It is a helpful resource to consult prior to or during a resource adoption.

While Kansas does not conduct large-scale materials reviews, several state agencies have done this, and have posted their findings publicly. The links below provide information about two states' review processes, as well as their findings for a variety of published ELA materials and textbooks.
